“Gloda does not protect”, bellowed Explattr, his eyes glowing with suppressed rage, “against exceptions thrown by openUnsharedDatabase on corrupt databases!”

The phrase echoed throughout the chamber, becoming eerily magnified as it shattered against the far reaches.   Bits of sparkly dust showered from the upper reaches of the booming cavern, dancing in faint mockery of the gravity of the situation.

TypeError however, held his ground, unwavering.

“this.asyncConnection is null”, he replied quietly, his limbs shivering with fear.  It had to be said.  No one could deny this was, in fact true, no matter how much no one wanted to believe it.

“But I’m afraid there’s more,” he continued on, ignoring the fact that Explattr was inching closer, his menacing limp thudding into the rocky and slippery ground, shooting shards of stone left and right, “nounDef is undefined.”

With that, the oncoming behemoth stopped, a confused look momentarily crossing his visage as he considered the possibilities.  “And what”, he mused almost to himself, “…what has become of of freetag?”

TypeError heaved a small sigh.  The worst had passed, but the path was still dangerous.  “Freetag decided to go to opt/homes/daniele.  Once he arrived, he found the NS_ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND in the openUnsharedDatabase, component returned, failure code…” his voice trailed off, mindful of his friend’s recent and painful experience with this.

Explattr shook his giant head slowly, as if to gently shake the memory of the thing from his mind.  “0x80520012?” He asked quietly.

TypeError nodded, knowing how much this meant to the ragged and ancient giant.  “The very same.”

“Then we must go, and swiftly,” commanded the hulking mountain of a man to his trembling, fragile but brave companion, “for the time has come when gloda.everybody must begin loading resource for app/modules!  Off then to Bugzilla!  We shall bring invoke the arcane nsIXPCComponents_Utils.import to battle bug 520139 once and for all!”

TypeError smiled.  This was indeed the start of a new and better era.  He even found the strength to raise his eyes to Explattr, with a  mischievous gleam in his eye, “And also for registering indexer: ab_indexer?”

“Ha!” boomed Explattr, again causing dust to silently shower the two in twinkly cover, “Yes, indeed, for Event-Driven Indexing is now true!”

And somewhere, far away, Gloda smiled with them.

Haha not-so-subtle scam.

I believe Harold Camping and his followers prevented the end of the world.

My reasoning is because (according to my Christian belief)

  1. no man would know the hour of the Lord’s return to the earth,
  2. since every fellow Christian believer has been taught this in sunday school, no Christian would have believed the billboards (since no man would know the return time)
  3. those who aren’t Christians wouldn’t believe the billboards either (since by default they aren’t believers)

Therefore, since no one should have believed that was the date and time of God’s return, that’s the exact time to have returned, then.

Now, since Harold Camping’s followers did believe, and knew the date and time, that threw off this perfect logic, meaning that’s why the Rapture didn’t happen.

So there you have it.  It’s not every day one gets to save the world as we know it.  This guy should get a medal.

“Well”, he muttered quietly to himself, flexing his shoulder back and forth a bit, the aches and grumpy tendons creaking against each other, “it could be worse”.

He rubbed the achy shoulder and heaved a tiny sigh of relief, and prayed the universal pessimist’s prayer of thankfulness without realizing it, in the back of his head:

“Thank you for the downpour of rain today soaking my shoes,

for some day I may be thirsty and without water.

Thank you for the blazing sun beating down and making an oily mess of my clothing,

for some day I may be frostbitten and without gloves or coat.

Thank you for the horrendously long and slow queue at the post office,

for some day I may be alone with no one to help me.

Thank you for the din of the cars and trucks careening around me on the road on the way to work,

for some day I may be deaf.  And with no car.  And unemployed.”

He stopped walking for a moment, peered down the long, hot and dusty path, wiped the sweat off his brow, and looked back at the burden which he had been dragging for quite some time.

The edges of the blanket at the end were starting to untie themselves again, meaning he’d have to stop and retie the tips together to keep the body of his former traveling companion from being left in the dust.  And by the looks of the surroundings, there would be a lot of dust for a very long and dry future on this path.

“Yep”, he muttered to himself as he finished tidying the heavy and lifeless burden, “ha, could be worse.  Could be me being carried.”

When one asks the question,

“Can you tell me which clients use module X in your software package”

and the response is,

“We have a list and can provide it after this meeting if the other clients are comfortable giving a recommendation”,

it’s considered bad form to follow up a few minutes later with…

“Um so does company Y use this module?  I know some people there and we might get some recommendations from them, what do you think?”

The correct smiley poker face response was perfect.

I give the vendor representative major kudos for keeping the smiley poker face glued on with a straight face.  I’d have bust out laughing 🙂

Ha my neighbor has a smooth way of borrowing ten dollars.

He’s owed me $20 for a few weeks now – I’m not overly concerned about it but also am not going to forget about it.

Today he popped round and asked me how much fuel I had in my truck.  I didn’t know where this was going so I told him the truth, about 1/2 tank.

“Ok”, he said, “let’s put some gasoline in it.”

So I figured, cool, I’ll get my $20 (or close to it) in fuel.

Filling up 1/2 tank is about $35 these days so I told him we’d just put $20 in and we’d be ok, he’d not owe me any more money.

“No, no”, he insisted, “go ahead and fill up on my card and just pay me the rest back in cash.”

So I figured, cool, I’ll get a full tank.  I have to fill up anyways so this isn’t a prob.  And I’ve got cash in the wallet for emergencies.

Tank fillup = just a tad over $35 (I know my truck).

I go to give him the $15 difference in cash… (-$20 owed + $35 fuel)

“Uh”, he stopped me, looking at the extra money still in my wallet, “I’d really really be happier with $25, and we can be square this Friday, is that ok?”

Heh heh this guy is smooth.  So -$20 (old balance) + $35 (fuel) -$25 (new balance) = $10 to his favor at the moment.

So I figured, cool, heck I wasn’t expecting even the $20 back, so if I’m down by only $10 instead that’s still ok.

Maybe in a few weeks we’ll be down to $5? Haha

So now I understand why our banks and underwriters didn’t see the ‘Credit crunch’ and housing lender market problems coming our way.  It’s because these were Ninja Mortgages.

Old article from 2007, amazing how clear hindsight is now that we’ve been whacked by one or more of those shuriken bailouts…

Why Ninja mortgages could wreak havoc

“Mounting evidence that borrowers are being given loans they can’t pay is fuelling fears of Britain’s own sub-prime crisis, writes Heather Connon”

Sometimes when dealing with a painful experience, one needs to get right back on the horse.

Then again, sometimes one needs to know when to stay the hell clear of the beast.

Rebuilding this site has been (and shall continue to be) a cleansing experience.

This is because re-populating this required a ride in the not-so-way-back machine, and that beast was back there, looking me dead in the eyes, waiting for me to crack. Thankfully I have gained the strength to stare it right back and watched it as it pouted away.

Hopefully those peeking in and commenting will find some educational and maybe even uplifting portions in this journey.  And maybe some may receive support in staring down those beasts of their own that are sniffing at their own doors.

And I’ll be “oldposting” items as time goes on.  Meaning I’ll be adding and back-dating old items I’ve written that I think should be part of the interwebby stream of consciousness.

Ever wish songs just sang what was happening in the music video? Wish no more…

O my.  Some are ancient old in Interweb years (whoa, some back in 2008!) but funny funny funny

I’m posting this because I’m “backing up” and using a dedicated blogger tool again to house my random thoughts, and will use Facebook status updates as simply a pointer to these.

Just a guess, or hunch, don’t know why but I’ve a funny feeling bout FB. I’ll be spending a little time xfering selected random thoughts posted on FB here.

Ok yes I’ll post that video here, it’s hilarious. I love that song. Not because anyone’s making fun of the lady; it’s just a wonderful melody.

(This started out as a response to a post about drilling in Alaska, and kind of turned into an essay, which is why I’m putting this response in a note, hehe)

An overweight man needs to recognise he’s put his health at risk, and needs to sensibly take measures to get back to good health. We in America have been overweight in the energy consumption area far too long and should take steps to learn what is a healthy level of usage and live within those means.

Having said that, I recognise that I’m posting this using technology that has benefited from the use of this “energy consumption”, so by stating the above sentence, I know I’m no better than the worst offenders.

I like my freshly-brewed coffee in the morning, using the tools on my smartphone (ok, I’m playing angry birds or pocket empires), being able to work in an air-conditioned office, having the freedom to transport myself across town at a moment’s notice without walking to the local station and standing in the heat or cold or rain in a queue to get on public transport.  That’s a lifestyle i’d like to continue.

However I am also an amateur photographer and lover of the outdoors, and have kids and a grandchild who I hope will enjoy traveling outdoors to admire the awesome beauty God has created.  I know we must find other sources of energy to allow for a hopeful future for my descendents.

I did some poking around in Google Earth to get views of the area we are discussing (the area just north of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge) and yes, it is a tundra but it is also filled with wondrous beauty that we really have to honor.  I’ve uploaded some awesome snapshots here that need to be seen to be appreciated.  If we’re going to discuss an impact on something, we ought to take the time to look at what we’re discussing.

Therefore I think we should do what we can to ensure our country is financially stable enough to invest in alternative fuel sources. Just like we can’t afford our current appetite for free money (i.e. raise the debt ceiling), we honestly can’t afford to continue our current pace of oil, natgas and coal consumption.  These items take far longer to re-create than it takes us to use them, so the simple law of physics here means we’ll become more desperate to find a non-renewable fuel fix as time goes by – and those of us who have had any experience with a junkie looking for a fix, desperate people do dangerous things.  So we need to – again with care – sensibly wean ourselves off this.

This means we should drill – and be extremely cautious in doing so – and at the same time use our oil-based technology to aggressively pursue renewable resource technology.

And find ways to use our waste products we’ve already generated. We’ve a literally tons of usable material in our landfills, but it’s less costly today to use new tree pulp than it is to retrieve and recreate paper from a dump. Our children’s children may not get a choice.

And to look for fuel sources and “cost saving” devices that DON’T cause toxic effects (i.e. spent nuclear rods , sludge by-products dumped into freshwater, mercury leakage from light bulbs, batteries, etc)

It’s a tall order, but with 8 billion folks on the planet (and rising), and each new discovery by some of these folks holding up the work for those following them, it would be a pity if we didn’t have the ability and fortitude make the decision to do this ourselves, instead of waiting to be pushed in this direction.

Ok, so the freeware autotune was not as useful as i had hoped.

However, with Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/windows), a free music loop and a quick snag of a tv show sampling i was able to make a cool audio clip…

1. I grabbed the first one off this list: http://www.compsoc.com/~gav/simp1.html

2. I grabbed a nice-sounding music loop off this site: http://www.soundempire.com/

3. And I made this (click the |> button):

Ok all, it’s fried egg fried egg. Today is the 13th, yesterday was the 12th, and tomorrow’s the 14th.

Ok, as a connoisseur of trolling, i’ll admit the girl has made my day.

But as a dad, my heart goes out to her.

Here’s an interview – and she doesn’t do badly with part of the US national anthem…
